How to Make Carbonated Drinks at Home

Do you love the fizz and flavour of carbonated drinks, but hate having to overpay for them at the store? We’re right there with you!

The good news is learning how to make carbonated drinks at home is easier than you think—and we'll show you how to do it using a SodaStream machine

In this beginner-friendly article, we’ll also answer some common questions about the SodaStream, like “How much syrup do you add to SodaStream?”, along with the specifics on what water and bottles can be used. Let’s get into it!

What Is SodaStream?

SodaStream is a brand of home carbonation machines, which are tools for DIY carbonated drinks. They’re easy to use and require no electricity or batteries. They are also eco-friendly and economical, reducing people’s consumption of plastic bottles and cans.

Step-By-Step Guide to Making Carbonated Drinks at Home

Before you get started, you’ll need the following:

  • A SodaStream machine
  • A CO2 cylinder
  • A bottle
  • Access to water
  • Syrup or juice for flavour

Step 1: Fill Bottle With Water

The first step is to fill the bottle with water.

If you’re wondering what water to use in SodaStream, the answer is anything—tap water, filtered water, or bottled water. That said, we recommend using cold water for better carbonation results. The colder the water, the more CO2 it can hold.

Don’t fill the bottle right up to the limit, this could end up making a mess when you move through the process. Once you’re done, screw the cap back on tightly.

You might also be wondering what bottles can be used with SodaStream.

The answer to this question is more limited: you can only use SodaStream-approved bottles with their machines. These bottles are specifically designed to withstand high pressure and prevent leaks. They are also BPA-free and reusable.

Step 2: Attach the Bottle to the Machine

Next, attach the SodaStream bottle to the machine. To do this, push the bottle up and back into the snap-lock mechanism until you hear a click. Make sure the bottle is securely locked in place! If not, the pressure could lead to leaks or even cause the bottle to detach from the machine.

Step 3: Carbonate the Water

Now comes the fun part: carbonating the water

To do this, press the carbonating button on the machine until you hear a buzz. This initial buzz indicates one level of carbonation. From there, you can choose how fizzy you want your drink by pressing the button more or less times.

It might take a few tries to figure out what level of carbonation tastes the best to you, but experimenting is part of the fun! Just be careful not to over-carbonate or you might damage the machine or cause a leak.

Step 4: Add the Syrup

Now’s the time to add the syrup of your choice to the carbonated water.

Simply remove the bottle from the machine and unscrew the cap. Then, pour the syrup into the bottle according to the instructions on the label. Screw the cap back on and gently tilt or roll the bottle to mix it well. Just don't shake or you might lose some fizz!

But how much syrup do you add to SodaStream? Generally, you'll need about one capful of syrup for one litre of water. This preference is entirely up to your taste buds. You can add more or less depending on how sweet you want your drink.
