How to Design a Kitchen Layout for Efficiency

Kitchen Location & Design Consulting

Do you love great design? Then this one’s for you!

We’re not talking about chandeliers or fancy wall art. This is about creating a restaurant and kitchen design that works for you. A smart layout doesn’t just look good; it boosts efficiency and keeps your kitchen running smoothly.

The right setup can make your kitchen safer and your team more productive. Ready to make the most of your space? Let’s get to it!

The Work Triangle

Let’s start with the basics: the “kitchen work triangle.” This design principle connects the three main work areas—sink, stove, and refrigerator—to create an efficient workflow.

For the layout to work well, aim for each side of the triangle to be between four and nine feet (1.2 to 2.7 metres), with the total distance around the triangle adding up to 15 to 26 feet (4.5 to 8 metres).

Also, try to keep major appliances and fixtures out of high-traffic areas. This helps maintain a smooth flow and makes it easier to move around while cooking.

Zone Organization

The next element is zone organization. Ideally, your kitchen will contain some clearly defined stations (zones) to streamline workflows:

  • Preparation zone, which is stocked with cutting boards, knives, sinks, and ingredients—the basics you need within arm’s reach while cooking.
  • Cooking zone, where you put your pots, pans, utensils, and cooking appliances.
  • Cleaning zone, where you store your supplies, usually near the sink and dishwashers.
  • Storage zone, which contains pantry items, dishes and cookware.

The more clearly defined these zones are, the more efficiently your crew will use the space.

Storage Solutions

No kitchen—even the biggest ones—has unlimited space. Poor use of space and clutter will lead to a cramped, chaotic, and possibly unsafe environment. That’s why it's crucial to optimize kitchen space to keep it as spacious as possible.

Some ways to optimize the space include:

  • Deep drawers
  • Pull-out shelves
  • Drawer organizers
  • Vertical dividers
  • Bespoke cabinetry

By combining these storage solutions whenever possible, you maximize space and create a more organized kitchen.

Traffic Flow

High-traffic areas should always remain accessible. To ensure smooth and comfortable movement, walkways should provide a clear width of 42 to 48 inches.

Kitchen Layout Options

You want to nail your kitchen layout shape right down to the letter—literally. Standard kitchen configurations, which are shaped like letters of the alphabet, are known for heightened efficiency.

  • L-Shaped Kitchen—This kitchen features countertops on two adjacent walls, versatile for corner spaces or lines with multiple cooks.
  • U-shaped kitchen—A kitchen layout featuring countertops on three walls, which maximizes counter space and is ideal for larger kitchens and multiple cooks.
  • I-shaped Kitchen (Island)—This layout contains central workspaces, which works well for open-concept kitchens and improves collaboration and interaction among kitchen crews.
  • Peninsula Kitchen—Although not a letter per se, this configuration features a connected island extending from a wall. This is ideal for smaller spaces that require additional counter or seating areas.
  • Galley Kitchen—A setup consisting of two parallel countertops with a walkway, creating efficiency for narrow spaces and compact kitchens.
  • Zone Layout—This layout divides a kitchen into dedicated areas for particular tasks, which is advantageous for large spaces or kitchens with multiple cooks working simultaneously.

How do you know which layout is ideal for you? Review each type and its ideal use to determine which space meets your needs best. Of course, you can always work with a professional team like ours here at s.h.o.p. Restaurant Supply to help you identify the best layout for your kitchen space.
